EUROVIA CS has first positive experience with VIAPHONE® asphalt mix
In Prague, EUROVIA laid this mixture in the trial section in Prague – Horní Počernice, on the road No III/22222 near the village Hájek u Karlových Varů, in the Slezská Street in Prague, on the road No II/324 between Staré Hradiště and Pardubice, and presently the 5. Května Street in Prague (South-Northern Expressway) is under reconstruction. After completion of noise-level tests in places, where this type of wearing course is laid, it has been proved that VIAPHONE® indeed substantially reduces tire noise levels of road traffic. “Noise induced by tires of vehicles on a coarse surface of pavement is reduced thanks to the fine-grained mixture. The thing is that asphalt-coated fibres act as ‘noise suppressor’,” points out merits of this technology Ing. Michal Sýkora. In addition, VIAPHONE® is, compared to the drainage asphalt, less susceptible to clogging. Thus, its properties are very suitable for construction of city and suburban roads and maintenance of streets, through highways and roundabouts (modern traffic circle junction), or suburban and access roads.
VIAPHONE® is an asphalt mixture having the grain-size distribution of 0/8 mm and high content of coarse aggregates. Generally, road asphalt with addition of organic fibres is used as the bonding agent. Depending on the traffic load, some asphalt modified by polymers can be used. The relatively high content of bonding agent improves workability of the VIAPHONE® mixture, and facilitates the laying process. In addition to the substantial reduction of tire noise, also the driving safety is substantially enhanced. “The composition, especially the discontinuous curve of grain-size distribution, ensures very good skid resisting properties of the VIAPHONE® mixture,” Ing. Michal Sýkora enumerates other advantages.
The VIAPHONE® asphalt concrete is designed for very thin layers and is to be laid in a thickness of 20 – 30 mm. If the base is too uneven, firstly it has to be levelled. VIAPHONE® has very interesting, homogenous surface structure. Its small thickness eliminates the need of height rearrangement of utility services elements in the pavement and reduces problems with connections.
