Construction work will start on the northern section of the D1 motorway in Slovakia near Levoča
Košice, 9 May 2012 – Members of a consortium consisting of EUROVIA SK, a.s., EUROVIA CS, a.s., and Stavby mostov Slovakia, a.s. (Bridge Construction Slovakia Inc), have undersigned today the design and construct contract for the 2nd Section of the D1 motorway from Jánovce to Jablonov with Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a.s. (National Motorway Company Inc). The consortium shall build this almost 10km long section of the D1 motorway near Levoča for half the initially planned cost.
The second section of the D1 motorway between Jánovce and Jablonov starts on the south side of Levoča. A motorway junction (or highway interchange for US readers) having the same name will be built here, to which the slip road allowing vehicles to exit a motorway to town will be connected. At the foot of the Šibenik Hill, the motorway will hide in a 635 meters long two-tube tunnel. This section will end at Spišské Podhradí, where it will be connected to the part of D1 motorway from Jablonov to Studenec being currently under construction (its left driving lane is just built). In addition to the Levoča junction and above-mentioned tunnel, this work will also include 10 bridges and a sizeable lay-by on the left named Levoča Rest Stop.
Construction companies led by EUROVIA SK have undertook to design and construct the motorway section with a length of 9 541 meters within 1 125 days (more than three years) at the cost of Euro 126.3 million net of VAT. This amount represents 46 % of the envisaged sum of Euro 270 million, which has been estimated by the state to be paid for this motorway part.
“I am very happy to have this opportunity to work on this part of motorway at Levoča and make use of good experience gained on many motorway projects in Slovakia. We all in EUROVIA are ready to do a highest quality job on schedule. Moreover, I am fully convinced that we are able to complete this new section at the cost shown in our winning bid,” said Martin Borovka, CEO of EUROVIA CS.
The tendering procedure to design and construct this motorway section started in June 2011. The winning consortium succeeded with the second lowest offer among thirteen tenderers, when the lowest offer ever was rejected on the ground that their bid did not meet other bidding requirements.
This section of the D1 motorway from Jánovce to Jablonov will reduce the distance between Poprad and Prešov compared to the existing road I/18 by approximately 3 km; travelling time will be reduced by 10 minutes at least. The D1 motorway will bypass the City of Levoča and towns and villages of Spišský Štvrtok, Spišský Hrhov, Klčov and Nemešany. The motorway route passes the hilly country or upland of south foothills of the Levoča Hills. Most of this route is on bridges, embankments, or in cuts with frequent fluctuation of uphill and downhill grades. Uphill lanes for slow vehicles will be on both slopes leading from the Levoča junction. The motorway will surpass the highest ridge with the Šibenik Hill in the Šibenik Tunnel, the deepest valley near Spišský Hrhov will be surpassed using an arched bridge with a height of more than 50 m (the highest bridge en route).
